Northern Beaches Home Organisation organises kids' bedrooms, playrooms and toy corners in family homes across Sydney's Northern Beaches and North Shore. We clear out what's broken, outgrown or doubled, then set up low, labelled storage with a set limit for each category, so tidying up becomes a short routine the kids can do themselves. Most rooms are done in a single session.

It suits shared bedrooms, playrooms buried in plastic after birthdays and Christmas, wardrobes of clothes two sizes too small, and families where the toys have spread to every room of the house.

How a kids' room session runs

  1. Clear the easy stuff first. Broken toys, incomplete puzzles, dried-out pens, clothes that don't fit and baby items go before anything sentimental is touched.
  2. Group what's left. Building blocks, vehicles, dolls, craft, books, dress-ups, games. Seeing a whole category together makes it obvious when there's too much.
  3. Set limits. Each category gets one container or one shelf. What doesn't fit is either rotated into storage or moved on, with your say and theirs.
  4. Store at their height. Everyday toys and books go low and open. Craft, small pieces and anything that needs supervising goes higher up.
  5. Label and hand over. Picture or word labels, a short tidy-up routine, and a rotation box ready to swap in a few weeks.

It works best when it's set up for their age

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: open tubs, picture labels, and only a handful of choices out at once.
  • Primary school: a clear spot for school bags, readers and sports gear, plus a limit for collections before they take over.
  • Tweens and teens: more say over the layout, a proper desk zone, and fewer but better-chosen storage pieces they won't outgrow in a year.

Before your session

Resist a big tidy-up the night before. We need to see how the room really gets used. Don't buy tubs or shelves yet either. If a birthday or Christmas is coming, tell us, because it's worth leaving room for what's about to arrive.

Kids' room and playroom FAQs

For part of it, ideally. We do the heavy sorting while they're at school or out, because it's much faster and nobody gets upset watching a toy go into a bag. Then we bring them in for the set-up so they choose where things live and help stick on labels. Children who help build a system are far more likely to use it.

We start with the easy ones: broken toys, puzzles with missing pieces, baby toys the youngest has outgrown, and doubles. That usually clears a lot without touching favourites. For everything else, you and your child decide. A maybe box that goes out of sight for a month is a good test. If nobody asks for anything in it, it can go.

Clean, complete toys and wearable clothes can go to op shops such as Salvos and Vinnies. Kimbriki at Ingleside accepts good-condition toys at its Toy Shed. If the toy pile keeps growing, the Cubby House Toy Library, run by EarlyEd with pick-up at Manly and Mona Vale libraries, lets families borrow toys instead of buying them.

Two things do most of the work. Container limits mean one tub for Lego, and when it's full something goes. Toy rotation means only part of the collection is out, with the rest stored and swapped every few weeks. Add picture labels for children who can't read yet, and a nightly tidy-up takes minutes, not a battle.

Yes. We give each child a clearly defined zone for clothes, books and their own things, and keep shared toys in a shared area, so arguments about whose mess it is have an easy answer. Storage is set at each child's height, which often means the older child's things go up a level.
